Who are BTS?

BTS debuted on June 13, 2013 under a small company called Big Hit Entertainment — so small that almost no one expected them to last. The name is short for Bangtan Sonyeondan (방탄소년단), Korean for "Bulletproof Boy Scouts": the idea of young people pushing back against the pressures aimed at them. Today it also stands for "Beyond The Scene."

The seven members are RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook — and over a decade they went from underdogs to one of the most influential acts on the planet. You don't need to memorize all this at once; start with a face and a song, and the rest will follow.

Listen first

Don't just read about it — start with one song.

Dynamite — Their first all-English hit and a Billboard No. 1 — the easiest entry point.
Spring Day — The emotional, fan-beloved side of BTS.
DNA — The song and video that broke them internationally in 2017.

Fan vocabulary

New fans drown in slang — here's the starter set.

ARMY
The fandom — short for "Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth." If you love BTS, you're ARMY.
bias
Your favorite member.
bias wrecker
The member who keeps stealing your attention away from your bias.
era
An album or concept period, each with its own sound and look.
comeback
A new release — not a return from absence, just new music.
OT7
"One True 7" — loving all seven members equally.

Why they matter

What set BTS apart was authorship: they write and produce much of their own music, often about real anxieties — school pressure, mental health, self-doubt. That honesty is why ARMY, their fandom, became known worldwide for its scale and devotion.
